Twin Volvos

The Volvo IPS drive system worked into the size and performance specifications requested by the owner. The 1,200hp coming from the twin Volvo D8 IPS 800 power plants (600 hp each) push the 48’ and 21-ish tons along at around 30 knots.

Control of those power plants is made easier by Volvo’s Electronic Vessel Control systems. Joystick docking or maneuvering along with the GPS linked, Volvo “Dynamic Positioning System” (DPS) are integrated with the Garmin MFD 8617 Glass Panels displays at the helm.

When running, the exhaust from those diesels goes through the drives. At idle, the exhaust is discharged through above-water ports to eliminate the “gurgle-gurgle” normally heard from such installations. It may seem like a little thing to be designed into the boat, but customer/boater/visitor comfort and enjoyment of the boating experience is also a key consideration in the design.
