Seaway cargo up this year
The St. Lawrence Seaway, which suffered a sharp decline in cargo in 2009 with the global economic downturn, is singing a different tune as officials report Thursday a significant 52.6 percent increase in iron ore shipments over last year. Laura M. Blades, director of Public Affairs for the American Great Lakes Ports Association, said 80 percent of the 7.9 million metric tons of iron ore was traded within the Great Lakes basin — mostly between Minnesota, northern Michigan, Quebec and the Labrador Iron Mines in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
