MICHIGAN CITY | Seeing a photo of the Cuyahoga River on fire in Time magazine while sitting his dorm room drove David Ullrich to an environmental career spanning more than 40 years.
"Sometimes, things have to get so bad, like rivers catching on fire and lakes dying like Lake Erie did," Ullrich said. "Only then will the public and elected officials take it seriously enough to do something about it."
Ullrich worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for more than 30 years, including serving as acting director of the Region 5 office in Chicago. He now serves as executive director of the Chicago-based Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway Cities Initiative, a group founded by former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.
