Nipigon Marina, Nipigon Ontario

Your Lake Superior Bucket List Stop

Everyone has a bucket list. Why not add camping while suspended above the ground in a tent supported by tree trunks or crossing the 49th parallel to that list? Both of these amazing experiences, and others, can be crossed off a bucket list at Nipigon Marina.

Bucket List Experiences

Located in Nipigon, Ontario, the marina is adjacent to a campground, which offers an opportunity for a bucket list worthy camping experience.

“If someone is coming by and they want a unique experience,” Nipigon Marina’s Business Manager Cory Gaudet notes, “there’s the first tree tent in North America right at the dock.”

The tree tent camping experience at the campground allows up to three adult campers to spend the night in one of the campground’s Tentsile Stingray tents. This experience allows campers to truly sleep amongst the trees in a tent suspended a few feet above the ground. What a way to spend a night under the stars!

In addition, if you want to spend some time under the stars but don’t plan on leaving the marina for a night in the campground, the Marina manager Sean Dorosh notes, “I do often set up a hammock, so there’s a hammock version of it, so I’ll set that up and boaters at the marina come out and have a fire on the beach and hang out in the hammock.”

If you’re looking for a bucket list experience that doesn’t require leaving the waters of Lake Superior, Nipigon Marina has an option for that as well. Have you ever heard of the 49th parallel? The 49th parallel north is a border between Canada and the United States. Nipigon Marina is ideally situated so boaters can easily cross this historic border and then commemorate the occasion.

“We are the northernmost freshwater port in Canada located just above the 40th parallel,” noted Dorosh. “Upon arrival people often come and ask us about the 49th parallel certificate, and it’s just a little take-home keepsake, and we let people know, if they didn’t, they’ve officially come to the most northern port.”

The Marina & Surrounding Area

While boaters and campers are enjoying these bucket list-worthy experiences, the marina still offers comfortable amenities to enhance their stay.

The marina is a full-service marina with 20 and 30 amp power connections on the dock, washers and showers, a sewage compound and fueling services. In addition to these amenities, those staying at the marina can buy some necessities at a kiosk in the marina where supplies such as general food, treats and firewood can be purchased. Reserving a spot at the marina doesn’t have to be done over the phone or in person either since the marina has an online reservation system.

Boaters looking for unique experiences that are family-friendly can find them at the marina and in the nearby town of Nipigon.

“We have the Kid’s Fishing Festival and then there’s also Blueberry Blast held in town in August where large groups of people all go out and pick blueberries for half of the day and there’s a lot of vendors set up around the town square. It’s a pretty big event here in Nipigon,” explained Gaudet.

If you’re a fan of sightseeing, there are stunning views surrounding the marina that can be seen on local hiking trails. There are easy, moderate, and difficult trails available in the area that provide access to the amazing scenery found in the Nipigon area. For avid hikers, the Nipigon River Recreation Trail, accessible at the marina, allows hikers to admire the beauty of Nipigon Bay.

“That one in particular is the one that links the Red Rock Marina to the Nipigon Marina,” Sean stated of the Nipigon River Recreation Trail.  “And we actually offer a little retrieval package. So if you want to hike to Red Rock, we have somebody who comes and picks you up on the other side and brings you back to Nipigon.”

For hikers who don’t want to travel the total challenging ten kilometers of the trail, going to one of the lookouts and then turning around is a good option.

“There are really nice lookouts, so if you have kids that’s what I would suggest,” recommended Sean. “Probably going for a bit, maybe going to one of the lookouts, and then coming back.”

Adventure At Nipigon Bay

Whether you’re looking for grand adventures or you just want to enjoy some of the most beautiful views Superior has to offer, Nipigon Marina offers activities that are worth including on a bucket list.
