Q&A With Mark Adamski

What kind of boat do you own?

M It’s a Formula 35-foot bow rider. It’s currently for sale. I’m looking for something a little bit bigger. There’s a 40-foot Sunseeker that I like. It’s actually used, but it’s for sale in Chicago. But probably something in the low 40-foot range would be nice.

What would you say you like most about boating?

M It is a form of luxury and that form of luxury is not being around other people, which relaxes me. It’s like when you live in an urban environment, which is Chicago where I live, you’re around people all the time in business. This is a luxury not like a Louis Vuitton bag or driving around in a Bentley. You drive half a mile into the lake an no one else is around you. It’s peaceful, it’s serene, and it’s amazing.

GLB What is something that is unique about you and your boating experiences?

M I think boating is fun, but there is also a lot of responsibility involved. If it’s going to be a nice day, especially in Chicago or the Great Lakes region where the season is short, then I want to go out both Saturday and Sunday.

When the boat comes back on the dock I’m not really looking to go out on Saturday night and have a crazy time knowing that there’s another crowd coming up the next day. I don’t want to be driving the boat sleepy the next day with 10 people on it. That’s really stupid as far as I’m concerned.

GLB How would you say social media has had an impact on your boating experience?

M I think what boating social media has done for me is because of the viral nature of social media you start following relevant hashtags like #boating and #boatlife or whatever. You get to see on Instagram especially, because you can see the videos in the stories that people post, but like it’s kind of fun to follow #boatlife and watch people going down a canal in Amsterdam where I never would have thought to go and look for that online before, but now that it comes to me it’s cool to see.

The other thing you can do is follow the hashtag of your boat model and see how people used different spaces on your boat. Sometimes you might pick up good ideas for customization, like if they added space for electronics or reconfigured the dashboard of your boat or something like that. It makes it easier to absorb information about it.
