Sunrise, Sunset
If you’re completely instrument free, a really simple thing to do is wait for the sunset or sunrise. Everyone knows that the sun rises in the East and sets in the West. Of course, taking this course of action shouldn’t be the first choice for a couple of reasons. First, the sunset and sunrise aren’t usually an exact indicator of east and west, depending upon the time of the year. And second, you could be stuck waiting for a while. But, if you have nothing else to go off of, it’s something! And it’s reliable.
