Gem Beach Marina, Port Clinton, Ohio

A resort-like atmosphere

Published in the February 2018 Issue June 2019 Feature Emily FitzPatrick

Who doesn’t dream of relaxing on the beach after a nice long day of boating over the summer on the Great Lakes? That’s right, no one. We all want to take part in the joys of perfecting tan lines, scrounging the shoreline for shells, and enjoying some serious wake on our boat of choice – powerboat, yacht, sailboat, whatever fulfills your specific fantasy.

Gem Beach Marina is perfectly located on the shores of Lake Erie for boaters wishing to live out their dreams of docking their boat at a resort-like marina where the beach and an array of activities await them.

However, space at this luxurious marina is extremely limited, so if you want to make your summertime fantasies come true it is best to be proactive, otherwise this fantastic opportunity will pass you by before you’ve had the chance to wake from your winter haze.

Location Is Everything

Gem Beach Marina is a family-owned business that has been under the same ownership for 41 years, proving that it is here to stay and continue making an impact on Lake Erie’s shoreline. Its location among Cedar Point, Sandusky, and the islands is truly unbeatable.

In the 40s, Gem Beach Marina began as a safe place to park your boat, but quickly evolved into a more resort-like atmosphere because of its prime location.

“We are one of the closest marinas to Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island. Being on Catawba Island, there’s a lot going on here as well,” shared Steve Lovitt, general manager at Gem Beach Marina. “We aren’t too far from Cedar Point. We have the luxury of being in the middle of a lot of cool things in the area.”

Port Clinton itself offers tons of fun adventures for boaters wishing to experience something new, including an African Safari Wildlife Park, the Jet Express (a fast ferry to get to Put-In-Bay Island while taking the time to learn about the surrounding area), and Port Clinton Lighthouse. And that’s just Port Clinton alone!

Mixing It Up

There are plenty of amenities at the marina itself to keep boaters entertained and well-stocked, amenities such as a marine store fully stocked with parts and snacks, private shower rooms, and an on-site heated swimming pool, are just the beginning of attractions that keep seasonal boaters returning every year.

Boaters who book their slips at Gem Beach Marina can expect a new slew of activities to participate in each year they return, which is perhaps one of the marina’s most enchanting qualities.

“Some of the things we consistently do are book bands and kid movie nights,” Lovitt added. “We like to switch it up and do different things every year so it doesn’t get stagnant. It gives everybody something different to look forward to every year.”

Adding new activities to the agenda gives those who continually book seasonally at Gem Beach Marina a chance to participate in something new. However, though the activities that appear on the calendar might be different than previous ones, boaters can expect to find a welcoming face and familiar setting when they return to dock their boats.

“Through the years we’ve created a nice social environment,” Lovitt stated. “We have bands on the weekend and different events, so everyone has gotten to know each other pretty well and it has created a nice neighborhood-family vibe.”

Time To Commit

Although Gem Beach Marina is comprised of 400 slips, the marina is almost never open to transient boaters, because it is packed full seasonally. So if you want to book a slip at this stunning marina it is best to do so early.

It isn’t hard to take the time to commit to this resort-like marina once a person realizes how much there is to get out of their stay, which is basically an extensive vacation. After all, did you hear anything after you read the word “beach”?
