Bald Eagle Marina, Kendall, New York

Making memories while traveling by boat

Published in the February 2018 Issue September 2019 Feature

Ever imagine the sun setting on a lake, your boat safely docked, the wind in your hair, the sounds of laughter along the beach and bonfires dotting the twilight like flaming stars against the night sky?

Right at the base of Lake Ontario sits Bald Eagle Marina, one of the only marinas along the south shore that gives easy access to the lake. Quickly making a name for itself, the marina offers exciting events, cozy amenities, and a home-like feel for all those boaters looking for a place of entertainment and relaxation.

The Familiar History

General Manager Susan Oschmann has a particular fondness for Bald Eagle Marina. Oschmann’s father bought the marina during the 70s and kept it running until he sold it in 1994. Catering to fishermen, he kept the place welcoming and lively, drawing in many different crowds. Oschmann never imagined she would return to it, but the family ties pulled her back.

“A couple of people owned it over the last 30 years, but it pretty much sat idle. I had a good handle on the industry and a vision for what the marina could once more become,” Oschmann detailed. “Working on boats for almost the past 7 years through my other business, Susie’s Boat-tique, brought me into the realm of going to marinas and working on people’s boats. Soon, we landed out here in Kendall at this marina and set up shop.”

Home-like Amenities

On the property of the marina itself is a boater’s lounge for recreational activities such as a pool table, TV and movies, and game nights.

“The bathrooms are very nice, just like the ones you’d find in your home,” Oschmann shared. “We have several of those, so it's just very homey. Lake Ontario can get very rough, so when you own a boat and you venture out, say on a Thursday or Friday for the weekend, and it's too rough, we give boaters alternatives. They can hang out with fellow boaters. It is pretty fun and active.”

With a nice picnic area for those sunny, go-lucky days, boaters can enjoy the beach area by taking walks along it, or if out on the water, several transient docks with a gas house act as the central hub for social activity.

Lures Restaurant, newly built and furnished with a tagline of, “We overlook nothing but the lake,” offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, serving food such as seafood, clams, bar food, and all different kinds of specials they run weekly. Lodging is available on the top floors of the marina for those tired fishermen who’ve spent a long day out on the lake and are looking for a comfortable place to recuperate.

Susie’s Boat-tique, a renowned repair shop, provides everything in the way of boating repair needs. Oschmann commented, “We do the gelcoat, the fiberglass, the boat painting, the canvas and vinyl here at the marina. It’s a wide array of services and it works out really well.”

Memorable Events

For all the dedicated fishermen out there, Bald Eagle Marina proudly holds its own Bald Eagle tournament series. “We call it BETS for short and it is growing and growing in leaps and bounds. We are going to possibly unite with another marina on it because it's getting so big,” reported Oschmann.

Many people enter and donate to the competition, which gives avid fishermen a chance to show off their skills and prove exactly what they are made of on the water. Besides holding their famous Bald Eagle tournament series, Bald Eagle Marina sponsors a group called Boaters Against Cancer (BAC) where every year boaters gather to do a flotilla out on the lake in remembrance of those who have either lost their battle with cancer or who are still bravely fighting it.

“That’s how we help the families,” Oschmann attested. “We’ve raised quite a bit of money and our goal is to try to get boaters to give to cancer in other areas across the Great Lakes so that there are other people helping for that cause.”

A Unique And Stunning View

Being the central point of activity, Bald Eagle Marina offers much in the way of catering to boaters’ needs. Looking toward the future, Oschmann promises there will be even more activities to do on the lake and around the marina.

Filled with the promise of unforgettable memories to be made, Bald Eagle Marina is definitely the place to stop and enjoy the moments that will last forever during your boating travels.
