Lake Staycation Activities

October 2022 Multimedia ShoreMaster

When you have a home on the lake, every day could be a vacation. It’s nice to get away from everyday life for a bit, and even if your waterfront is far away from other places there’s still plenty of things that you can do with your loved ones.

Summer is a great time to make memories together, and a staycation at your own home or lakeside cabin gives you the perfect excuse to spend time with each other and not have to worry about going anywhere or doing anything special. Whether you’re having a romantic outing or some much-needed family time, there’s a lot you can do on the lake that doesn’t even require a boat; here are just four ideas:

Look Up at the Sky

If you’re taking a staycation with a partner, there’s nothing more romantic than looking up at the sky together while listening to the water lap the shore. If you’re early risers, set an alarm and go out on your lake dock to look at the sunrise before the rest of the world wakes up—make sure to bring a blanket to snuggle up on your waterfront bench, because it can be chilly before the sun rises. If you’re night owls, sunsets are also beautiful to watch, and you can stay out late to stargaze afterward, and you can turn up the romance by bringing some wine and cheese out on the dock.

Get Cozy Around a Fire

Whether you’re having a romantic staycation with a partner or a wonderful time with your whole family, no summer outdoor experience is complete without a bonfire. A dock-mounted fire table is a great way to combine being on the water with hanging out by the fire. Sit around the fire and tell ghost stories, or make s’mores, or just be warm and toasty into the night.

Go Back to Camp

Even if no one in your family is going to camp this year, you can do a lot of outdoor “camp” activities at home or at your lake house. Prepare some balloons for a water balloon fight, dust off some yard games, or set up a sports tournament—see who can score the most baskets, or think of your own safe, friendly competition. The outdoors is a great place for doing anything messy, so buy some supplies and tie-dye a white cotton shirt.

Stay Inside

If it’s rainy or just not a great day to go outside, you can still have fun during your staycation on the lake. Stay out of the elements and break out activities you can do as a family. Get crafty: paint pictures together, or put together a scrapbook of family memories. If it’s a lazy day, pop some popcorn and start a new or favorite movie that everyone will enjoy. By the time you’re done with your indoor activities, the weather might be better, and you can still go out on the lake afterward.

The point of a staycation is to relax and enjoy time together without the pressure of putting together a big “vacation.” Spend your time on the water having fun together and making fun lasting memories.
