Askov Finlayson was founded in 2011 as a men’s clothing store in Minneapolis, Minn. It began as a place for owners and brothers Andrew Dayton and Eric Dayton to feature brands they admired that weren’t available in Minneapolis at the time. Askov Finlayson championed Minnesota’s identity as the North, capturing that resourceful, hearty culture. The company built up around a core of Minnesota’s traditions of exploration and year-round enjoyment of the outdoors, as well as the thriving design and artistic community in Minneapolis. It’s the combination of perseverance and creativity that are the finest characteristics of America’s North.
The company name comes from two neighboring towns in Northern Minnesota. Askov and Finlayson share a highway exit that the Dayton brothers passed countless times growing up on the way to and from their family cabin, one of their favorite places on earth.
When the thermometer first tops 50 degrees in the spring in Minnesota, people shed long pants to expose their knees for the first time since Halloween. Made from lightweight-but-hearty cotton twill, the Vermilion Short has a canvas reinforced seat built to take many summers on ballpark bleachers and canoe seats. The tailored cut is flattering but not too snug and will conform to your body the longer you wear them.
The custom-dyed cotton canvas of the Explorer Pant is from Japan’s Kurabo Mills and—like Minnesotans—is comfortable yet hard-wearing. Seat and knee reinforcements will take years of punishment and come out looking better with age. A button fly, deep pockets and reinforced belt loops round out the durable features. The versatile fit is somewhere between tailored and athletic and pairs as well with a sportcoat as a fleece pullover. The Dayton brothers are known to go right from one to the other in the same day and strongly encourage you to do the same.
