A “SAFE BOATING” course ( Michigan’s DNR “Boat Michigan” course ) will be offered by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Lansing Flotilla (in conjunction with Michigan DNR) , on Saturday, February 11th, 2012, commencing @ 8 am to 5 pm at the American Legion Post 238, 1785 S. Ahoy Fellow Mariners! USMA Chicago, a locally owned and operated marine education academy, is once again offering it's USCG Masters and OUPV Captain's License course at Columbia Yacht Club this Spring. The up-coming class will start Thursday Feb 16 at 1800 hours and run through April 14, 2012. The 80 hour 8 week program has been approved by USCG/NMC and USMA Chicago is authorized to administer the examinations in lieu of travelling to a USCG Exam Center in Toledo or St. Louis.

An Informational Session is scheduled for Thursday Feb. 9 at 1900 hours at Columbia YC in which all are interested persons are invited to attend to learn more of the process of getting a Captain's License.

FRANKLIN FURNACE, Ohio– The Ohio Boating Education Course will be offered February 11, 2012 at Shawnee State Park in West Portsmouth, Ohio, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft. The fee for the course is $5 which covers the cost of course materials. Interested persons may register to take the course by calling 740-353-7668.

The Ohio Boating Education Course covers a variety of boating topics such as the navigation rules of the road, boating and personal safety equipment, navigational signage, Ohio boating laws and much more. Approximately 12,000 Ohioans complete an approved boating safety education course each year.

Ohio law requires any person born on or after January 1, 1982 to be able to show proof they have successfully completed an approved boating safety education course if they operate any watercraft powered by a motor greater than 10 horsepower.

MUSKEGON — A six-week, free boater class will be offered by the Muskegon Sail and Power Squadron beginning Feb. 16. at the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum, 1346 Bluff.

Two-hour classes will be offered on the topics of required safety equipment, state and federal regulations, navigation aids, tying knots, and how to use GPS equipment.

Registration will be 6:40-7 p.m. on the evening of the first class. There will be a $10 charge for those interested in taking an exam to earn a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Boating Safety Certificate.

Winter is the season to “sharpen your knowledge of navigational skills, emergency procedures and safety regulations” by attending public boating classes, says Tillie Kinsley, public relations officer for the Stark County Power Squadron.

The Power Squadron is offering America’s Boating Course starting at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at GlenOak High School Community Campus at 1801 Schneider St. NE (enter door 17). Classes will continue Feb. 21 and Feb. 28, with review and exam night March 6. No preregistration required. Families are encouraged to attend. Boating safety will be covered, with a look at federal and state requirements.

Kinsley encouraged both new and seasoned boaters, crew members and nonboaters to take the classes. She also recommended it to personal watercraft operators, hunters or fisherman operating an outboard utility boat, canoeists and kayak paddlers.

Boating season is only about 10 weeks away, and with it comes heightened concern about the potential spread of zebra mussels.

Besides attaching themselves to boats, motors and trailers, they can also hitchhike from lake to lake on docks, boat lifts and other equipment that will soon be dunked into water.

To lower that risk, a new state law requires mandatory training for those in the business of dock and boat services.

About 70 company owners and workers met this week in Chanhassen for the first of 21 training sessions to be held statewide.

"We need to get you up to speed to protect our lakes and to protect you," Jay Rendall, invasive species prevention coordinator for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, told the group.

Nebraska Boating Has New Legal Requirement in 2012

Lincoln, Neb. - Boaters should be aware of a new legal requirement that became effective Jan. 1, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Persons born after Dec. 31, 1985, who operate a motorboat or personal watercraft in Nebraska must have successfully completed the Nebraska boating safety course. They also must be in possession of a course certificate when operating the boat.

Boating season may be months away, but now is the time to makes plans for taking a boater safety course. A list of boating safety classes is available at OutdoorNebraska.org/boating.

ROCKFORD - Rockford Sail and Power Squadron will offer course focusing on safe boating operation on Feb. 13.

The course, Training for Serious Boaters, will be from 7 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. at Rock Valley College’s Physical Education Center, Room 0106, Rockford.

The course is open to any boater ages 12 and older.

Participants will learn boating terminology, safe boating practices, marine radio operation and navigation.

The cost of course materials is $47, and the course fee is $55.

Boat-ed.com Meets New NASBLA Standards for Online Courses

ATLANTA — Boat-ed.com announced today that all of their online courses meet the new online delivery standard adopted by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, which requires students to study a minimum of three hours. This change went into effect Jan. 1, 2012.

Boat-ed.com courses, which are approved by NASBLA and the state boating safety agencies responsible for boater education, were reconfigured to meet additional requirements. As a result, boat-ed.com students in every state must:

Visit every page in the course
Take mandatory quizzes at the end of each chapter
Complete the 3-hour course before taking the final exam

The state of Ohio’s mandatory boating education law requires boaters born on or after Jan. 1, 1982, to complete a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved course before operating a boat more than 10-horsepower.
There are 24,161 boats registered in Cuyahoga County. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Boating Accident Report for 2006-2010, there were been 276 accidents on Lake Erie involving 350 vessels, 127 injuries and 19 fatalities.
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 7-5 is offering the following two safe boating courses: Boating Skills and Seamanship (powerboat-oriented) and Sailing Skills and Seamanship. Both boating courses will take place from 7-9:30 p.m. on Jan. 25 and run every Wednesday through March 21. Classes will be held at Garfield Middle School,
13114 Detroit Ave in Lakewood.
