Ind. lifts boating restrictions on 3 lake chains

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The state Department of Natural Resources has lifted boating restrictions on three northeastern Indiana lake chains because lake levels have returned to acceptable levels.

The DNR said Wednesday it has lifted temporary restrictions for motor boats on the Barbee Lake chain, including Kuhn, Big Barbee, Little Barbee, Irish, Sechrist, Sawmill and Banning lakes; the Tippecanoe Lake chain, including Lake Tippecanoe, James Lake (Little Tippy), and Oswego Lake; and the Indian Lake chain, including Westler, Witmer, Dallas, Hackenburg and Messick lakes.

The heavy rainfall in April did have a dramatic effect on the water level of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that the average level of Lake Michigan-Huron rose 5.16 inches from March to April.

That five inch rise is greater than the entire seasonal rise last year. Last year Lake Michigan-Huron only rose four inches from March to July.

An upcoming forum aims to create more dialogue about declining water levels in Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

Challenges of a Changing Lake is the topic of the fifth annual Sources of Knowledge Forum to be held in Tobermory from May 3 to 5.

The event includes speakers from Canada and U.S. who will provide insights on the Great Lakes and the challenges faced by those who live on or near them, said Bill Graham, chairman of the forum.

"What we want to do is be able to let people have enough knowledge that they make an intelligent choice of how they want to handle this," Graham said Monday.

Low lake levels haven’t stopped boaters from snatching up spots at Lakeview Park Marina.

Although water levels in the Great Lakes are reportedly below average, the city marina is almost at capacity for the upcoming boating season. Trese MacNeil, community sports services co-ordinator for the city’s parks and recreation department, said water levels haven’t affected business at Lakeview.

“We’re almost at capacity with our boats, so as far as business being affected we don’t see any effects so far,” MacNeil said. “We’ve been on a steady increase with obtaining seasonal boaters in particular.”

VERMILION — George Phillips has been around Vermilion for more than 50 years, and he’s never seen water levels in Lake Erie this low.

“For us and the city, this is serious,” Phillips said.

As owner of Valley Harbor Marina, Phillips operates the city’s biggest marina, which holds about 400 boats.

The Great Lakes water levels are like a puzzle with many pieces.

I've been writing about the weather part of the water level puzzle.

The amount of water going into the Great Lakes due to weather factors is a fairly straightforward formula.

The formula is rainfall on the lake and over the drainage basin minus the evaporation of the lake water.

SUPERIOR, WI (WTAQ) - Canadian National wants to fill 24 shallow acres at the Duluth-Superior Harbor, so it can have a larger place for storage and loading.

The company also says Dock Number 6 on the site needs to be stabilized.

It was built in 1918. The firm plans to use dredged material from the harbor and the nearby Lake Superior shoreline, to fill in a shallow area on the Duluth side.

Saugatuck —The latest survey of the channel from Lake Michigan to Kalamazoo Lake shows deep enough water for the arrival of a cruise ship in Saugatuck. The fear of shallow water helped get the waterway on a state list for emergency dredging that could be voted on in the House on Thursday.

A six-month forecast by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers predicts that water levels in Lakes Huron and Michigan will be at or near record lows every month through May, the traditional start of the boating season in the Great Lakes.

The data, released Monday as part of the Army Corps' monthly bulletin, show Michigan and Huron could be setting new lows the next four months, and continue to be just above record lows in June and July.

Low water levels on Lake Ontario have area marina operators crossing their fingers that they will continue to be able to launch boats for the summer season. Lake Ontario is 18 inches below levels recorded this time last year and 11 inches below the long-term average, said George Cotroneo, chief of the hydraulics and hydrology branch for the Buffalo District of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.
