WASHINGTON -- Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today announced more than $7.5 million in competitive grants to 10 states for 11 projects to support recreational boating through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Boating Infrastructure Grant program.

“Recreational boaters and anglers contribute to our nation’s thriving outdoor recreation economy and play an important role in conservation of our rivers, watersheds and oceans,” Secretary Salazar said. “These competitive grants will help provide quality opportunities and access to America’s great outdoors for our nation’s boaters and anglers, while creating jobs by funding major construction projects to build docks, boat slips and facilities.”

Outdoor recreation, including boating and fishing, contribute an estimated $730 billion to the U.S. economy each year, Salazar noted.

Berlin seeks extra feet for Eureka bridge

The success of the Berlin Boat Club’s recent $300,000 restoration of the Eureka Locks hinges on finding about two and a half more feet of clearance under the soon-to-be-built permanent bridge in Eureka.

That’s what boaters say they need to ply the waters of the Fox River unimpeded from Oshkosh to Berlin. But official plans for the bridge cut that clearance short.

“That would be real good, to spend $300,00 on reconstruction of the locks and then to have 50 percent of the boats coming to our fundraisers not be able to get here,” said Berlin Boat Club Commodore Ed Kirchhoff.

The city of Berlin is asking that the bridge be re-engineered with the additional feet of clearance to avoid permanent harm to the city’s economy, said Mayor Dick Schramer.

While it still has a lot of healing left, the much-maligned Ottawa River is showing signs of life. The Ohio Department of Health Thursday lifted a "no-contact" advisory in effect since April, 1991, for the western half of a 17-mile stretch of the river. The state health department lifted the advisory everywhere west of the point I-475 splits off into I-75 North and I-75 South.
