Hatchery fish to be euthanized for testing positive for IPN

IPN poses no threat to human health, so catching, handling and eating a fish with the virus can't hurt you, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

But once the disease is in a fish hatchery, it's tough to get rid of. That's why, when the Service's Allegheny National Fish Hatchery in Warren tested positive for IPN, it was "depopulated." All of the fish there were euthanized, so the facility could be disinfected. It later returned to producing fish.

An outbreak of disease in a Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission hatchery is expected to lead to the euthanizing of some steelhead and brown trout.

IPN, or infectious pancreatic necrosis, a viral disease that can affect all kinds of fish but is particularly common among trout and salmon, was discovered three months ago in fish supplied to cooperative nurseries by the commission's Corry hatchery in Erie. Word of that discovery was made public last week.

A new study released by the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation reveals that RBFF's Take Me Fishing brand and Take Me Fishing advertising continues to achieve high levels of awareness and is positively affecting decisions to participate in boating and fishing.

The study, based on an online survey, found that consumers who recall a Take Me Fishing print ad are more than three times more likely to intend to go fishing, take someone fishing or go boating for the purpose of fishing than consumers who do not recall the ad. In another analysis, the study scored Take Me Fishing print advertising 74.4 out of 100 on its ability to influence readers' decisions to go fishing in response to the ad's call to action.

Michigan DNR Fish report: Great care key for anyone planning to fish on ice

LANSING -- Safety issues are still a concern for those heading out ice fishing, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The department says people should use extreme caution near inlets, outlets, and pressure cracks.

People should be sure to stay back away from open water, the DNR said Wednesday in its weekly fishing report. Most of the lakes to the north have ice, but over the southern half of the Lower Peninsula, lakes still have little to no ice.

SOUTHEAST LOWER PENINSULA

Lake Erie: Bluegills are hitting on wax worms and perch on shiner minnows in the Metro Park Marina.

Huron River: Still has good steelhead action off Huroc Park and Labo Park.

Detroit River: Had good perch action from Gibraltar to Ballenger Park. Boats were launching at the Metro Park Marina. Use shiner minnows with perch rigs while fishing the cuts and canals.

Bad news for Chinook salmon in Lake Huron

State biologists have some bad news for anglers of Chinook salmon in Lake Huron. Numbers of the fish are dwindling and the reason is a diminishing habitat.

"Recreational harvest of Chinook salmon has virtually vanished in the southern two-thirds of Lake Huron," said acting DNR Fisheries Division Chief Jim Dexter. "It's obvious the forage base is no longer available to support large numbers of Chinooks in Lake Huron."

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will reduce Chinook salmon stocking in Lake Huron by more than half in 2012, compared to 2011 levels.

The DNR plans to stock 693,000 spring Chinook fingerlings in 2012, down from almost 1.5 million stocked in 2011, because of poor return and harvest of stocked Chinooks.
