Spring brings fish stocking, regulation changes

This year’s fishing season is starting on the wheels of stocking trucks, new regulations and programs to attract more participants.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said its $9 million program is stocking 19 million fish – 370 tons – including eight trout and salmon species and four cool-water species, including walleye and muskellunge.

This year, DNR’s fish-stocking vehicles will travel nearly 138,000 miles to more than 700 spots around the state.

More signs of spring in Orleans County as Lake Breeze Marina prepared more than 100,000 king salmon to be released into Lake Ontario.

In an effort to improve end of the season fishing, charter boat captains met on Wednesday to put 106,000 king salmon into pens to later be released into Lake Ontario.

For Jim O'Brien, fishing always has been a family activity.

O'Brien, a Waukesha County fishing guide and tournament angler, said some of his favorite memories were the times he went fishing with his father and grandfather as a youngster growing up in Black River Falls. And those great times continue to this day when he goes out on the lake with his two sons.

"He instilled the love of fishing for us at a young age," said his son Chris. "I started going to tournaments with him when I was 12 years old. Sometimes we would go out and fish for walleye all night."

And Chris' older brother, Jimmy, got the thrill of his life when he and his father finished second in a major walleye fishing tournament in 1999.

Racine-Caught Brown Trout Recognized as World Record

The catch had already earned him $10,000 in a fishing tournament and placed his name in the state record book. Now it has labeled Roger Hellen of Franksville as something else - world record holder. The National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward has certified Hellen's catch of a 41-pound, 8 ounce brown trout as the species world record.
