The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it will soon release a study evaluating the effectiveness of its electric Asian carp barrier on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal - a barrier operating at half its maximum voltage. The barrier, completed in early 2009, was built to send as much as four volts per inch into the water. But the Army Corps initially capped its voltage at one volt per inch to prevent sparks from flying between barges operating on the canal, many of which carry flammable materials.

The days may be numbered for several Allegheny River navigation locks. Anticipating funding cuts, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is exploring plans to close five locks that are used by recreational boaters but have little commercial traffic. The plans are in response to President Barack Obama's proposed 2012 budget, which would cut funding for Army Corps low-use navigation projects from $140 million in fiscal 2011 to $76 million, nationally.

CINCINNATI– On Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is holding a public scoping meeting in Cincinnati from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the University of Cincinnati - Tangeman University Center, located at 2766 UC Main St., to gather input on the Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS). The public is invited to attend this scoping meeting and to provide comments on GLMRIS. Identical presentations about the study will be given at 2:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., each followed by the comment period. The purpose of GLMRIS is to evaluate a range of options and technologies to prevent the transfer of aquatic nuisance species (ANS), such as Asian carp, between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River through aquatic pathways.

If you like the beach, there might be more of it to lie on this year. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects there will be less water this year in the Lake Michigan-Huron basin. "We're projecting the lake is going to remain well below its longtime average -- as many as 20 inches below for the next six months, (and) 6 to 13 inches below last year," said Keith Kompoltowicz, an Army Corps meteorologist.

DETROIT – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, has announced its planned schedule for lock operations until the end of the navigation season for the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The MacArthur Lock will be operated on an as-needed basis from Dec. 19 through Dec. 30, and then closed for the winter. Additionally, the Poe Lock will remain operational 24 hours per day through Jan. 15. The Poe, which can handle 1,000-foot vessels, is the largest and most modern of the locks at the Soo.

“Our professional and dedicated Soo work force is committed to operating the locks as long as conditions permit and the need exists” said Lt. Col. Michael Derosier, district engineer. “The locks are vital to the maritime industry as it serves its customers with the transport of raw materials and commodities.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has found new evidence that Asian carp are crossing the electric barrier that is supposed to keep the invasive fish from moving into Lake Michigan. The ACOE website shows that eDNA evidence of bighead and silver carp was found in the Des Plaines River close to Lake Michigan during sampling conducted in October. No further details were given about the discovery.

There has been plenty of action in the St. Clair River near the Great Lakes Maritime Center this week -- and it hasn't been passing freighters. Luedtke Engineering of Frankfort has been dredging in the river as part of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project. The project is to perform regular maintenance on the federal shipping channel.

Saugatuck, MI - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, armed with roughly $150,000 from under-budget projects, will attack a shoal near the Saugatuck harbor mouth later this month. A late-April survey revealed that since last September, winter Lake Michigan waves and currents had washed in sand leaving water depths between 7 and 8 feet extending some 400 feet out between the pier heads. The corps prefers depths of 12 feet or more.

The Army Corps of Engineers has scrapped a proposal to close navigational shipping locks in the Chicago waterway system as many as four days a week to prevent migration of Asian carp into Lake Michigan. The Corps, however, is recommending temporary lock closures at times when biologists use fish poisons or other methods to search for carp in the well-traveled shipping corridors.

US Congresswoman Candice Miller (MI-10) has applauded the awarding of funds from the US Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, for dredging portions of the navigation channel of Lake St Clair. The US$887,375 contract has gone to Luedtke Engineering Company who will dredge 30,500 cubic yards of shoals from the navigation channel and place the dredged materials in a confined disposal facility.

The 25-year-old debate over what to do about sediment dredged from the Toledo shipping channel will continue for at least another year. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency yesterday issued a status-quo permit for the massive project undertaken each June by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
