(Lake Huron ) - American researchers find Ontario's West Coast is littered with plastic so small it's often difficult to see.

Geoff Peach of the Goderich-based Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation says the study reveals the Great Lakes contain the highest concentration of plastic pollutants in the world.

PORT HURON, MI -- The Saint Clair River is a major trunk line for commercial navigation. But, is it also possible that it's draining the Great Lakes?

The river partially connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron to Lake Erie.

International Joint Commission Public Affairs Advisor John Nevin said Erie’s lower elevation makes the Saint Clair River act as a drain.

“If the Saint Clair River erodes or is dredged, that makes that drain bigger…more water runs out of the Lake Michigan-Lake Huron bathtub into the Lake Erie bathtub,” Nevin said.

The heavy rainfall in April did have a dramatic effect on the water level of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that the average level of Lake Michigan-Huron rose 5.16 inches from March to April.

That five inch rise is greater than the entire seasonal rise last year. Last year Lake Michigan-Huron only rose four inches from March to July.

Compared to the dark depths of the ocean or the frigid ends of the earth, Lake Huron hardly seems like an extreme environment. But sinkholes discovered at the lake’s bottom have conditions just as harsh-and harbor life forms just as unusual-as those of deep-sea hydrothermal vents or Antarctica’s permanently frozen lakes.

And like their marine and polar cousins, the sinkholes’ peculiar occupants-mostly microbes-are providing scientists a glimpse of what early life on Earth might have looked like.

An upcoming forum aims to create more dialogue about declining water levels in Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

Challenges of a Changing Lake is the topic of the fifth annual Sources of Knowledge Forum to be held in Tobermory from May 3 to 5.

The event includes speakers from Canada and U.S. who will provide insights on the Great Lakes and the challenges faced by those who live on or near them, said Bill Graham, chairman of the forum.

"What we want to do is be able to let people have enough knowledge that they make an intelligent choice of how they want to handle this," Graham said Monday.

LANSING -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will release about 100,000 Atlantic salmon into Lake Huron and two of its tributary streams this spring.

Yearling salmon will be stocked in the St. Marys River, the Au Sable River, Thunder Bay River and Lexington Harbor in southern Lake Huron.

A funny thing happened this morning as the snow squalls pounded down and the cold wind whipped through the city. The spring equinox began at 7:02am.

Even now, seven hours into this supposed "spring", there is no sign of it. The heavy squalls continue with a brisk 40km/hr wind from the northwest.

Michigan's coastal communities could lose millions of dollars this year, after water levels in Lakes Michigan and Huron hit record lows over the winter.

Whether via slip fees, shipping, commercial fishing, licenses, real estate or tourism, the state's $7-billion boating economy, which includes about 800,000 licensed boats and about 500,000 jobs, is bracing to take hits.

ALPENA - The City of Alpena is in line for an $800,000 grant that would dredge the downtown harbor, which will enable larger vessels, particularly large sailboats to enter, because of the decline in water depths in Lake Huron coupled with the fact the harbor hasn't been dredged in more than 20 years.

Great Lakes Michigan and Huron in February bounced back slightly from all-time record lows set in January, according to preliminary numbers released Friday.

After a month of seemingly-continuous snow and rain, preliminary numbers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers show that Lake Huron and Lake Michigan finished above the all-time low mean for February..

Through the month's 28 days, Lakes Michigan and Huron posted means of 600.26 feet above sea level. The all-time lows mean for February came in 1926, when the lakes measured 599.60 feet.
