GRAND MARAIS, Mich.— Plans to rebuild a breakwater at the Grand Marais Harbor in Michigan's Upper Peninsula have been delayed until spring as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers works to review and approve revisions it requested to a permit application for the $7 million project.

the crew aboard the Great Lakes steamer Edmund Fitzgerald. Now, 36 years after her tragic loss, the Fitzgerald remains the most famous of all shipwrecks on the Great Lakes, and no one is any closer to determining what caused her loss. Even with modern forensic science, we can only guess what happened that night.

Catching a cold wave

If there are big waves on Lake Superior’s North Shore, you can bet there will be surfers at Stony Point south of Knife River. The breaks there make for good surfing any time of year. While the area missed the big snowstorm that dumped up to 19 inches in the Twin Cities area and south, north of Pine County was left with mostly wind Sunday and into Monday. Perfect for the fanatics from the Superior Surf Club who will drop everything to catch good waves. They wear thick wet suits and are covered head to toe. They cover their faces in petroleum jelly. The air temperature was 21 degrees late Sunday afternoon with wind gusts of 50 mph.
