The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft recently announced that the Bay Village City School District has been awarded a grant of $ 2,239.71 as part of the Boating Safety Education Grant Program. The Division of Watercraft is awarding $366,528.02 to political subdivisions and non-profit organizations for boating education programs. The Bay Village Schools is one of 30 organizations across the state to receive funding.

FRANKLIN FURNACE, Ohio– The Ohio Boating Education Course will be offered February 11, 2012 at Shawnee State Park in West Portsmouth, Ohio, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft. The fee for the course is $5 which covers the cost of course materials. Interested persons may register to take the course by calling 740-353-7668.

The Ohio Boating Education Course covers a variety of boating topics such as the navigation rules of the road, boating and personal safety equipment, navigational signage, Ohio boating laws and much more. Approximately 12,000 Ohioans complete an approved boating safety education course each year.

Ohio law requires any person born on or after January 1, 1982 to be able to show proof they have successfully completed an approved boating safety education course if they operate any watercraft powered by a motor greater than 10 horsepower.

MUSKEGON — A six-week, free boater class will be offered by the Muskegon Sail and Power Squadron beginning Feb. 16. at the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum, 1346 Bluff.

Two-hour classes will be offered on the topics of required safety equipment, state and federal regulations, navigation aids, tying knots, and how to use GPS equipment.

Registration will be 6:40-7 p.m. on the evening of the first class. There will be a $10 charge for those interested in taking an exam to earn a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Boating Safety Certificate.

Winter is the season to “sharpen your knowledge of navigational skills, emergency procedures and safety regulations” by attending public boating classes, says Tillie Kinsley, public relations officer for the Stark County Power Squadron.

The Power Squadron is offering America’s Boating Course starting at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at GlenOak High School Community Campus at 1801 Schneider St. NE (enter door 17). Classes will continue Feb. 21 and Feb. 28, with review and exam night March 6. No preregistration required. Families are encouraged to attend. Boating safety will be covered, with a look at federal and state requirements.

Kinsley encouraged both new and seasoned boaters, crew members and nonboaters to take the classes. She also recommended it to personal watercraft operators, hunters or fisherman operating an outboard utility boat, canoeists and kayak paddlers.

OSWEGO — Winter’s cold has finally arrived in the Port City and, with it, the U.S. Coast Guard warns of the dangers of being in and near the waters and ice of Lake Ontario and the Oswego River.

The 9th U.S. Coast Guard District, out of Cleveland, reminds people to use extra precautions when planning recreational activities on cold water and frozen ponds, streams, rivers and lakes. As the region’s maritime search and rescue professionals, the Coast Guard understands the dangers of cold water as well as the dangers of venturing out on the ice. Officials want to remind the public to make a serious investment and commitment to ice safety on Lake Ontario since varying levels of ice thickness are common on the Great Lakes.

WASHINGTON – While the majority of boaters in colder parts of the country have winterized their boats or put them into storage until spring, many still rely on their vessels for hunting, fishing or necessary transportation in cold weather, substantially increasing their risk of a deadly accident. Michigan DNR Fish report: Great care key for anyone planning to fish on ice

LANSING -- Safety issues are still a concern for those heading out ice fishing, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The department says people should use extreme caution near inlets, outlets, and pressure cracks.

People should be sure to stay back away from open water, the DNR said Wednesday in its weekly fishing report. Most of the lakes to the north have ice, but over the southern half of the Lower Peninsula, lakes still have little to no ice.

SOUTHEAST LOWER PENINSULA

Lake Erie: Bluegills are hitting on wax worms and perch on shiner minnows in the Metro Park Marina.

Huron River: Still has good steelhead action off Huroc Park and Labo Park.

Detroit River: Had good perch action from Gibraltar to Ballenger Park. Boats were launching at the Metro Park Marina. Use shiner minnows with perch rigs while fishing the cuts and canals.

The state of Ohio’s mandatory boating education law requires boaters born on or after Jan. 1, 1982, to complete a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved course before operating a boat more than 10-horsepower.
There are 24,161 boats registered in Cuyahoga County. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Boating Accident Report for 2006-2010, there were been 276 accidents on Lake Erie involving 350 vessels, 127 injuries and 19 fatalities.
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 7-5 is offering the following two safe boating courses: Boating Skills and Seamanship (powerboat-oriented) and Sailing Skills and Seamanship. Both boating courses will take place from 7-9:30 p.m. on Jan. 25 and run every Wednesday through March 21. Classes will be held at Garfield Middle School,
13114 Detroit Ave in Lakewood.

TOLEDO -- Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 16-13 will offer a safe boating class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 21 and 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 22 at Bay View Yacht Club, 3902 N. Summit.

Registration is $35.

Another class will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Lucas County Public Library, 2727 117th St., Toledo.
