When the nation's oldest boat show, the New York Boat Show, began in 1905, it would probably have been tough to find any kitchens, couches, marble bathrooms and master suites on board the vessels.

Nowadays, when the boat show comes to the Javits Center on Manhattan’s West Side, the boats are full of technology. Instead of using a compass, navigators can use the high-tech Ray Marine E7 unit.

“We can control our chart plotter on it, our depth sounder on it, we can connect thermal cameras to it. We can connect video cameras to it, monitor satellite weather, monitor satellite radio. We can monitor engine displays and functions," says Tony Gangone of West Marine. "But one of the coolest features of the E7 is we can pair it with our iPad or our iPhone and we can view the images on the screen of our iPad or iPhone anywhere else on the boat."

A few of the creatures pause to graze, while the rest move slowly across the tundra. What's unusual is that the caribou herd is simulated. They are moving at their own whim across a virtual world that mimics an ancient land bridge that existed 10,000 years ago, but now is submerged beneath the waters of Lake Huron.

Ted Strickland intends to sign an iron-clad lease option giving the Lake Erie Energy Development Co. the legal right to conduct extensive testing in the lake toward the construction in 2014 of five very large wind turbines.

There’s a new shift in the politics of food, not quite a movement yet, more of an eco-culinary frisson. But it may have staying power; the signs and portents are there. Vegans, freegans, locavores — meet the invasivores. Some divers in the Florida Keys recently held a lionfish derby, the idea being to kill and eat lionfish, an invasive species. Local chefs cooperated by promoting the lionfish as a tasty entree. The idea drew editorial support from Andrew Revkin in a post on The Times’s Dot Earth blog in which he also mentioned an attempt by some fisheries biologists to rename the invading Asian carp “Kentucky tuna” to make it more appealing to diners. And the Utne Reader recently ran an article about Chicago chefs turning their attention to the same invasive fish.

HURON BEACH, Mich. — Great Lakes biologists hope to make progress in the fight against the invasive sea lamprey by taking advantage of the eel-like fish's keen sense of smell. Researchers at the Hammond Bay Biological Station on Lake Huron are testing mating pheromones, which are scents emitted by male lampreys to attract females.

Plastiki, a 60-foot sailboat largely constructed from 12,500 recycled plastic bottles, docked in Sydney Harbor today after four months crossing the Pacific Ocean on a journey meant to raise awareness about the perils of plastic waste. The crew started out from San Francisco in March and traveled 8,000 nautical miles.
