When it comes to testing the mettle of a building material, there’s nothing quite like exposing it to the swells and storms of a large body of water.

Take the near century-old concrete Point Abino Lighthouse built on a rocky shelf below the high water line of Lake Erie as an example. When the lake is at low ebb, a person can walk around the lighthouse off the shores of the Town of Fort Erie. But fierce lake swells can top nine feet, crashing against the sides of the 95-foot tall structure, making access impossible and wreaking havoc on the structure.

So when someone, either because of age or disability, can’t ascend its staircase for a tour, it upsets her. “We’ve had actually quite a few people who come and find out we’re not” handicapped accessible, McDonnell, 54, said. “We can’t put an elevator in here.”

Tales of shipwrecks and the isolated lives of lighthouse keepers are retold over campfires, on porches of inns and often in a car as families head to nearby Michigan for a long weekend. Touched by four Great Lakes, Michigan is home to 115 lighthouses, more than any other state. Lake Huron's cold, clean water has helped preserve 200 shipwrecks in the waters off Alpena. Think of Michigan as the shape of a left-hand mitten — Alpena is at the tip of the thumb, on Lake Huron.

Based on Petoskey City Council action Monday, Quarry Park potentially could serve as a site for a replica of a lighthouse which stood along Petoskey's breakwater early in the 20th century. The council voted 4-1 to endorse the lighthouse project proposed by the Mackinaw City-based Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, with member Bill Atkins casting the dissenting vote. With the city providing the site, the lighthouse preservation and advocacy group will need to raise funds for construction, installation and upkeep if the light tower is to be built.

Rock Island - Marti Strehlow doesn't know how the lighthouse keepers did it. A week each summer is enough for Strehlow and her family. Then: making sure the lantern in the Pottawatomie Lighthouse glowed all night, carrying buckets of sperm whale oil or kerosene up narrow steps, hauling drinking water from Lake Michigan, maintaining a garden, running a one-room schoolhouse and helping ships in distress.

An abandoned lighthouse toppled into Lake Ontario during a 1916 storm, closing out Point Breeze's heyday as a tourist beacon that lured schooners and steamboats, an upscale hotel and racetrack and trainloads of daytrippers fleeing the summer swelter. This spring, a 37-foot-tall replica was erected with painstaking devotion beside the harbor. Already, visions of an economic revival in an overlooked oasis in upstate New York are flickering on the horizon.

The federal government no longer needs the Harbor Beach Lighthouse and wants to hear suggestions about what to do with it. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment says the U.S. General Services Administration has deemed the 1885 lighthouse on the Lake Huron shoreline "excess to the needs of the federal government."

In 1975, the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald left Superior, Wis., headed for Detroit with 26,000 tons of taconite when it encountered a November gale. Unable to reach shelter, the ship went down — taking with it a crew of 29 men.
