Rogers City Marina

Rogers City is a beautiful, well-protected harbor, with an excellent state-funded marina. It is located on Lake Huron in northeast Michigan. The center of town is two blocks from the marina. Rogers City is a great place to catch a variety of ﬁsh, including salmon. It is known as the Gateway to the North Channel.

The Rogers City Marina has a total of 123 slips—103 are ﬂoating docks and 20 are stationary. The marina will always make room for the transient boater. The harbor now has free boater WiFi and a Facebook page.

Features that are near this marina make it a wonderful place for boaters with children. These include an excellent swimming beach, a playground, a park with bandshell used for regular concerts all summer, plus volleyball and basketball courts, as well as the full facilities of a small city.

Michigan Oil Spill

Michigan Oil SpA 30-inch pipeline carrying oil ruptured on July 26 in Marshall, Mich., spilling liquid into Talmadge Creek, which feeds into the Kalamazoo River. Enbridge Inc., the company that owns the pipe, estimates that 819,000 gallons of oil leaked, while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the total was more than 1 million gallons of oil. The EPA is heavily involved in the issue, heading cleanup and containment efforts. The agency rejected multiple cleanup plans that Enbridge proposed before fi nding one acceptable.

Tall Ships Come to Bay City

The small waterfront town of Bay City, Mich., lies alongside the Saginaw River a few miles from the shallow water of Saginaw Bay. It's a quaint city with historic charm, a downtown area and only about 33,000 residents. But that number will jump to more than 100,000 when this, the only official host port in the state of Michigan, welcomes the Great Lakes United Tall Ships® Challenge fleet and a Tall Ship event like none other from July 15 to 18.

The Tall Ships

In 2010, Bay City will host eleven Tall Ships as part of its fourth Tall Ship Celebration, a maritime festival that has twice received the American Sail Training Association's "Port of the Year" award. Nine ships, including movie stars and a Cold War relic, will be available for boarding and touring. Two additional ships, Bay City's own Appledore IV and Appledore V, will offer sailing excursions throughout the festival.

Boaters' Frustration with City's Plan for Beaches

When this all started, we went down the “environmental” path and then down the “safety issue” path. It felt like the game kept getting changed and nobody was explaining the rules, until Commissioner Mary Ann Moore spoke … [of a] “new” plan.

The perception that the boaters have is that the commissioners are against “boaters.” Communication between the commissioners and the boaters has hit rock bottom.

Humbug Marina offers a beautiful lakefront and a full-service marina. Located in Gibraltar, Mich., the marina is conveniently located two miles from I-75, halfway between Detroit and Toledo, “Where the Detroit River Meets Lake Erie.”

There are 600 slips for vessels of up to 55 feet in length, during a full boating season from April 1 to Nov. 1. Additionally, the Rack & Launch facility berths another 316 boats up to 40 feet in length. Seasonal rates range from $785 to $2,100, with new customers receiving a 15 percent discount during their ﬁrst season. Humbug also offers three forms of winter storage: Marinainside, outside and wet. Winterizing and shrink wrap are also available.

Eldean Shipyard is located in Macatawa, Michigan, just five miles west of Holland, on the south shore of Lake Macatawa, where it joins Lake Michigan. It is one of the oldest active shipyard-marina complexes in the United States. It began as the Jesiek Brothers Shipyard in 1901. Today, the shipyard is an award-winning marina, as well as a Certified Michigan Clean Marina.

St. Joseph River Yacht Club

Founded in 1913, the St. Joseph River Yacht Club is now in its third location, a magnificent, historic setting on the St. Joseph River in St. Joseph, Michigan. The club moved to the former Lighthouse Depot in 2003 and has grown to 525 members with about a two-year waiting list to join.

You are passing over 160 shipwrecks and a veritable cross-section of maritime history.

That’s because when you cruise to Alpena, you can’t help but cross the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. This 448-square-mile preserve is framed by the northern and southern edges of Alpena County, and its headquarters is right in the heart of town.
