Many great boats have ﬂown the Columbia burgee since its ﬁrst freshwater regatta in 1893. Columbia sailors continue to dominate many of the regattas held on the Great Lakes. The club introduces sailing to the public through its Skipjack Program, a nine-week series that includes two classroom and ﬁve on-the-water sessions. The Wednesday night racing series, Beer Can Regatta, is a big hit with the racers, and the Cruising Fleet travels all over the Great Lakes in search of great times.

Columbia provides classes and seminars on boater safety, responsibility and environmental issues. Junior Sailing classes are offered for youths ages 5 to 18. These classes include summer camp and Shark Bait (5- to 8-year-olds), as well as high school and college teams. Learn to Sail and US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certiﬁcation programs are offered for adults and are taught by US Sailing-certiﬁed instructors.

On a late spring day earlier this season a group of five had chartered my boat for a fishing trip on Lake Michigan. The morning was overcast, the air was cool, and a light rain sprinkled the water. I arrived in late morning, when the wind was still strong and a few flashes of lightning brightened the sky. The weather was unfavorable for taking the Kingfisher out, and the local weather service was predicting continued wind and rain.

Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club

Located in Northpoint Marina in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, just south of the Wisconsin-Illinois state line, the Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club (WHYC) is perfectly positioned between Milwaukee and Chicago. The club was founded in 1995, and a new clubhouse with a commanding view of Lake Michigan was built in 2000.

During the summer season, Winthrop Harbor Yacht club offers a variety of activities, from boating educational seminars to free Sunday breakfasts. Professional bar service and outstanding catering are also available during the summer.
