Federal grant paves way for marina work

NORTH TONAWANDA -- A federal grant will contribute nearly $700,000 toward the rebuilding of an old marina, which will take place as a shuttered yacht club is refurbished into a new, public waterfront restaurant where boaters can pull in for a meal.

"This is very good news for people who have been looking for things to do along our riverfront," Mayor Robert Ortt said today. "We hope to be able to do some work this spring."

To help bring new life to the former home of the Niagara River Yacht Club on River Road, next to Gratwick Park, the city has also been in the midst of setting up a lease agreement with the same company that runs Templeton Landing restaurant on Buffalo's waterfront.

When it comes to testing the mettle of a building material, there’s nothing quite like exposing it to the swells and storms of a large body of water.

Take the near century-old concrete Point Abino Lighthouse built on a rocky shelf below the high water line of Lake Erie as an example. When the lake is at low ebb, a person can walk around the lighthouse off the shores of the Town of Fort Erie. But fierce lake swells can top nine feet, crashing against the sides of the 95-foot tall structure, making access impossible and wreaking havoc on the structure.

KALAMAZOO — Conservationists at the Kalamazoo Nature Center want to stop invasive species from encroaching on area wetlands. A recent Environmental Protection Agency grant should help. The $196,000 grant will fund the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a project to restore ecological harmony to a 1,500-acre parcel of land collectively owned and managed by the Kalamazoo Nature Center, Fort Custer Training Center, Hart’s Lake Calhoun County Conservation District, the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy and the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute.

ROCK CREEK, OHIO — The Nature Conservancy announced today that it has accepted the donation of the Grand Valley Christian Center Camp from City Mission, a Cleveland-based non-profit charitable organization. The donation, which includes 58 acres and more than 25 buildings, will be added to the Conservancy’s 1,300-acre Morgan Swamp Nature Preserve in Ashtabula County and will become the new site of the Conservancy’s Northeast Ohio Project Office.

A contractor working on a Kinnickinnic River flood control project between S. 6th St. and I-94 has encountered two areas of soil contamination, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District officials said Monday. An estimated 2,300 cubic yards of soil tainted with arsenic and lead extends from the middle of the corridor, downstream of a concrete channel lining, to the freeway along the south bank of the river.

A budget passed by the U.S. House would invest $322 million in the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative for Lake Erie and the other Great Lakes.
