Arctic shorebird makes rare winter detour to Lake Erie coastline
On a recent trip to Conneaut, which is as far northeast as one can get in Ohio, I had the great fortune of seeing one of the rarest birds that appears annually in our state.
The harbor and dredge impoundment at this Lake Erie port city is a legendary bird-watching hot spot, and scores of unusual birds have been found here.
Fellow bird-watcher Peter King was along on the trip, and as soon as we arrived at Conneaut’s sand flats, we knew something interesting was astir. A small group of bird-watchers was staring apparently at their feet.
