'Extinct' fish strain found off Leelanau

A Yooper thought to be lost has been found in the environs off the Leelanau County shoreline. A native Great Lakes fish long thought to be extinct appears to be making a comeback in Grand Traverse Bay – and people may be eating it, believing it is whitefish. A strain of lake herring more commonly seen in the last century in Lake Superior is now thriving in local waters, according to fisheries research biologist Randy Claramunt of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources research station in Charlevoix.
