The Lake Ontario food chain at work

Competition from non-native species such as zebra mussels, loss of habitat, and overfishing have led to declining populations of native lake fish populations, from smaller prey fish to the large sport fish that not only dine on them, but lure anglers to the region. But in some cases, improved water treatment, conservation and stocking efforts have left some room for hope, said Matt Sanderson, fisheries biologist with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
