Cities coalition opposes plan to ship nuclear waste through lakes, canal
A coalition of Great Lakes cities, including St. Catharines, is opposing a Bruce Power plan to ferry radioactive recyclables through the lakes and Welland Canal. The Bruce Nuclear Generating Station has asked for a licence to ship low-level radioactive generators from Lake Huron through the Welland Canal and the rest of the St. Lawrence Seaway to a recycling plant in Sweden. Concerns from residents and local politicians in several Great Lakes cities, including the Garden City, prompted the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission to hold a public hearing Tuesday on the matter.
