Milwaukee needs to make sewer separation a priority
Apparently chastened by the disastrous flooding that befell Milwaukee in late July, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District officials last week said they were eyeing a substantial increase in funding to combat stormwater inflow from private laterals. Instead of the $1 million they spent on private sewer inspections this year, the district is now talking about spending some $150 million to inspect and repair private laterals that feed stormwater into the public sewer system. During heavy rains, that inflow quickly fills the Deep Tunnel storage system and overcomes MMSD's ability to process at its treatment plants.
