Great Lakes beach closings down, but still lead nation

Beach closings in the Great Lakes were down by 4 percent in 2009, but the region still leads the nation in closings, according to a new study released by the Natural Resources Defense Council. The study monitors water quality at vacation beaches across the nation. In 2009 there were 18,682 days of beach closings and advisories in the United States, the sixth highest in the 20 years since the agency has been tacking the numbers.
