Rock Island - Marti Strehlow doesn't know how the lighthouse keepers did it. A week each summer is enough for Strehlow and her family. Then: making sure the lantern in the Pottawatomie Lighthouse glowed all night, carrying buckets of sperm whale oil or kerosene up narrow steps, hauling drinking water from Lake Michigan, maintaining a garden, running a one-room schoolhouse and helping ships in distress. |
