Cargo shipments on the rise on Great Lakes

U.S.-flag ships on the Great Lakes saw a 5 percent increase in cargo in June compared with May and a 39 percent increase in tonnage carried compared with the same time last year. The ships carried 10.4 million tons of cargo in June, according to a monthly report from the Ohio-based Lake Carriers Association, which pointed out this year's figures are still off about 3.7 percent from the five-year average.
