Control efforts to start earlier

State Department of Environmental Conservation personnel will start their cormorant control program on the St. Lawrence River earlier this year, focusing on keeping nesting birds from occupying American Island. "Typically, we start actual management in early May," said James F. Farquhar, DEC Region 6 wildlife biologist in Watertown. "We're hoping to do it a little earlier on American Island to do a level of management before they get too tied and invested on the island."
