Sailing Seaway Clayton Festival, Antique Boat Museum Join Forces

Officials from the Sailing Seaway Clayton festival presented by Caskinette’s Lofink Ford and the world-famous Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York announced today that they have joined forces in making the second-annual festival bigger, better and community-wide.

Sailing Seaway Clayton presented by Caskinette’s Lofink Ford, which will take place June 14 through June 17 in downtown Clayton and feature the appearance of tall ship Fair Jeanne, will work with the Antique Boat Museum in an effort to grow activities in the Clayton community during the festival weekend.

MBIA encourages boaters to drop a line during National Fishing and Boating Week, June 2-10

LIVONIA, Mich. —
Memorial Day, “official launch weekend,” and the great weather has inspired a lot of boaters to get out early on the water - just in time to prepare for National Fishing and Boating Week (NFBW), June 2-10. This week is dedicated to the celebration of boating and fishing, which happens to coincide with Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend, June 9-10.

Officers give out a dozen Boating While Intoxicated charges

MONTICELLO, Ind. (WLFI) - There are many differences between boats and cars, but get caught driving under the influence, and the punishment is the same. Impaired drivers can face a class C misdemeanor and a fine of $500 or a year in jail.

This holiday weekend, Indiana Conservation Officers gave out a dozen citations. Lieutenant Dan Dulin said while holiday weekends are usually busy, this weekend really surprised him.

Northwest Indiana marinas gearing up for boating season

Business at local marinas is picking up as the summer boating season gets under way, harbormasters said.

Most marinas are reporting the same or slightly higher slip occupancy rates compared to previous years.

The Hammond Marina, with 916 slips available for rent, expects half of those to be occupied this season, which is on target to raise the $1.2 million in income the marina budgeted for this year.

Irondequoit officials prepare to enforce new boating laws

In the wake of the Irondequoit Town Board’s approval Monday of amended boating laws, officials are preparing for increased regulation on the water.

The rules don’t go into effect until 10 days after they have been published, so they cannot be enforced until after Memorial Day.

Michigan boating industry shows signs of improvements

BAY CITY, MI — As the Michigan economy continues to show signs of improvement, so do some of its more prominent industries.

While the Big Three auto companies and other areas of the manufacturing sector continue to grab headlines, a recent report shows profits from another form of transportation have been on the rise.

According to the National Marine Manufacturing Association annual report, released May 18, retail sales in Michigan of boats, marine equipment and related services increased by 29.5 percent to $454 million in 2011.

Lake Fenton's boating access site to temporarily close after Memorial Day

FENTON TOWNSHIP, MI – Lake Fenton's boating access site will temporarily close after the Memorial Day holiday.

The Department of Natural Resources will reconstruction the boating access site, beginning Tuesday. It's expected to be closed until July 24 – when construction is expected to be completed.

Great Lakes lake levels still below average

Over the 20 years East Jordan residents Jim and Helen Truchan have lived on the northern side of the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix, they've watched their water line slowly recede.

"I've gone from 65 feet of rolling dock to now 165 feet of dock ... for me, (lower lake levels) is an economic problem," said Jim Truchan, laughing.

Developer takes regional approach with Lake Erie project

Entrepreneur Jeffrey DiLaura wants to develop a 2.52GW wind farm in the shallow US waters of Lake Erie, looking to straddle three states to leverage the best resources and achieve economies of scale.

The project, Lake Erie Alternative Power (Leap), envisages the placement of 700 turbines in clusters off Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

Boaters reminded to wear life jackets

GREEN BAY — With the return of the recreational boating season, the U.S. Coast Guard in Green Bay and state Department of Natural Resources are reminding boaters about the importance of personal flotation devices.

Boaters are required to carry appropriately sized, Coast Guard-approved life jackets for all occupants, said Paul Mason, vice commander for the Green Bay flotilla of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

When they spotted the odd, orange-colored piece of wood near the shoreline, they suspected it had a story.

"I knew this was no ordinary driftwood, so I pulled the wreckage to shore and that's when we discovered the note from the students at the Maritime Center," said Joe Giessert. He was hiking along the Niagara River near Buffalo with his son, Joe Jr., and a fellow Boy Scout when they found the wood with a note instructing them to contact Pennsylvania Sea Grant Education Specialist, David Boughton in Erie, Pa.

Rideau Canal Boating Season Opens Friday

The 180th season of boating on the Rideau Canal opens tomorrow.

Parks Canada says boaters can begin using the Rideau Canal and the locks for the start of the boating season.

The agency warns floating debris may cause potential hazards on the waterway, and navigation aids may be missing, displaced or partially submerged.
