by Rosemary Parker SOUTH HAVEN, MI -- From the sunny beaches here this weekend, it appears the harsh winter of 2013-2014 is well behind us. But the winter is expected to take a heavy toll on the alewife population of Lake Michigan in coming weeks, a Michigan State University Extension educator said. No need to panic. Even with the large die-off that's expected, there won't be the massive mountains of fish washing ashore from Benton Harbor to Chicago that occurred in 1967, said Dan O'Keefe, a scientist with Extension's Great Lakes Fisheries Education and Management. There are far fewer alewives in Lake Michigan now than there were then, he said. http://www.mlive.com/news/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2014/05/lake_michigan_alewives_slammed.html
