(Sodus, N.Y.) -- People who live near Lake Ontario from Rochester to Oswego woke up to see the shores littered with the bodies of over 100 dead loons washed up on the beaches.

Investigators from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation spent the day checking out the dead loons in places like Chimney Bluff near Sodus. more

Harrison makes water a priority

Marina, boating study: Don't jump to conclusions

After years of community debate on the issue of a Grand Marais marina expansion, a study has been completed which provides data to the on-going marina discussions.
Called "Marina and Boating Activity Study for the Western End of Lake Superior," the study was authored by Doug McEneany of Duluth and funded by a grant from the Blandin Foundation with oversight by the City of Grand Marais, the Department of Natural Resources and the Blandin Community Leadership Program. more

Lorain looks for bright future on the lakefront

Split Rock beacon lighting to commemorate sinking of Edmund Fitzgerald

On Nov. 10, 1975 the Great Lakes freighter Edmund Fitzgerald was lost with her entire crew of 29 men near Whitefish Bay at the eastern end of Lake Superior.

Split Rock has been a retired lighthouse since 1969, but every Nov. 10, at dusk, the beacon at Split Rock Lighthouse is relit in memory of those men, that famous ship, and all the sailors lost on other Great Lakes shipwrecks. more

Water park resort could boost local tourism

South Haven has long been known as the charming lakeshore town with nice, sandy beaches, casual little restaurants and cute shops.

Traffic may back up a bit on weekends as visitors search for beachside parking spaces but, for the most part, South Haven remains a sleepy little town on the edge of Lake Michigan. more

Bush Signs Bill For Great Lakes Fish And Wildlife

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush has signed a bill earmarking $80 million dollars over five years to help restore habitats in the Great Lakes region. The money won't be spent unless included it's included in separate appropriations bills. more

Traverse City, Mich. -- Governments on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border should work more closely to prevent and keep track of spills that pollute the Great Lakes system, a binational agency said Tuesday. more

Guns on the lake

Local boaters are reasonably concerned that the United States Coast Guard plans to locate a machine gun training range about 10 miles outside of Irondequoit Bay. After all, fear of being shot at shouldn't be a part of recreational boat outings. more

Lake Superior closing in on record low level

The water level in Lake Superior is nearing its lowest point in the past century, according to the latest government data.

The water level in the world's second-largest lake dropped in September to within 2.5 inches of the record low for September, which was recorded in 1926, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. more

New vessel to support lake trout repopulation effort

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently put into service the M/V Spencer F. Baird, a one-of-a-kind vessel that will stock millions of native lake trout in the Great Lakes. The boat was christened and commissioned during a ceremony at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy Pier in Traverse City. more

Longueuil dumps raw sewage in the St-Lawrence

University of Minnesota ALUMNI RACING

Get your double-handed team ready for the first annual University of Minnesota Alumni Regatta. On Sunday, October 15th the UofM sailing team and the Wayzata Sailing School/Foundation will host a one-day fleet racing regatta in 420's. Each boat must have a University of Minnesota alumni on board to participate, they can skipper or crew, so dust off the dingy boots and rehearse the Minnesota rouser for a fun day of sailing with the Gophers. $40 entry fee per team will be used to benefit the team.
