New State Grants Help Marinas Keep Lakes, Rivers Clean
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Denise M. Sheehan and State Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC) President David Sterman today announced that the State is expanding its successful Clean Vessel Assistance Program (CVAP) to include grants for the operation and maintenance of eligible marina pumpout facilities. State wants engineers to assess dam dangers
CHICAGO — The state will hire outside engineering experts to assess safety at 25 river dams, some of which cause strong undertows and deadly swirling currents, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn said Sunday. Some of the so-called "low-head" dams on the Fox, Des Plaines, Kankakee, Rock, Sangamon and Vermillion rivers were built more than a century ago to generate power and defend against flooding and erosion, but have been blamed this year for a series of drownings. more»

Golf Classic Raises $6,400 for Boating Scholarships
The Recreational Boating Industries Educational Foundation (RBIEF) Scholarship Classic raised $6,400 at its recent outing held August 8th at Hawk Hollow in Lansing, Michigan. Eighty golfers and nearly 50 sponsors supported the event which is the scholarships primary funding source. In 2006, the RBIEF awarded $8,750 in scholarship funds to 12 Michigan students for the 2006/2007 school year. more»

So far, Sea-Doo trip raises $22,000
Ann and John Boland completed a 1,600-mile Sea-Doo venture through the Great Lakes on Saturday. So far, they've raised more than $22,000 for their Great Lakes Run Foundation, a charity that funds mammograms for uninsured women. "I don't know if it was because we had better Sea-Doos than we had before, or if it was just better weather," said John Boland, trying to make sense of the fact that this year's run went smoother than 2003's 1,355-mile trek. more»

Lake Michigan ferry suspends service
MUSKEGON (AP) — Service on the Lake Express high-speed ferry will be suspended until Thursday to allow time for a damaged gear to be replaced on one of the boat's four engine-drive mechanisms. The ferry, which carries cars and people across Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Muskegon, is expected to be back in service on Friday, Lake Express LLC said in a release. more»

Winthrop Harbor police to share $92,000 helicopter
Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin law enforcement and fire service agencies will soon have a helicopter to assist them in homeland security missions, search and rescue operations and counter-drug activities. Spiny Waterfleas Found in Rainy Lake
A Duluth teenager vacationing on Rainy Lake last week found more than fish on his line. Matt Gunderson (18) caught an invasive species known as the spiny waterflea (Bythotrephes longimanus). More than a dozen collected on his fishing line on July 18 while he was trolling for walleyes off Blueberry Island in Voyageurs National Park. more»
