General cargo booming at port, but dredging concerns growing
General cargo business at the Port of Toledo continues to boom, more than tripling during the start of this year’s Great Lakes shipping season. But it’s a boom that the port director says is at risk because of inadequate channel dredging by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. more»

Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Tournament
The $8.8 million Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League will visit on June 10 for the first of five regular-season events, sponsored in part by Yamaha Outboards. As many as 200 boaters and 200 co-anglers are expected to compete in the tournament, which will award as much as $45,000 in cash, including as much as $6,000 to the Boater Division winner. more»

It's not like opening day at Fifth Third Field, but for members of the Associated Yacht Clubs the annual Opening of the Port celebration, starting tomorrow, is just as big a deal. Grosse Pointe Yacht Club to Host U.S. Youth Sailing Championship
When Hurricane Katrina destroyed the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans, the remaining mess consisted of more than just debris from the storm. It also left the dilemma of where to host the 2006 U.S. Youth Sailing Championship, the nation’s premiere youth sailing event for sailors under the age of 20. Seeing a fellow yacht club in distress, the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club stepped in, agreeing to host the June 22-29, 2006 event and to plan it in a mere six months. more»

Other than dogs with a penchant for anything stinky, whoever thought that an alewife die-off would be greeted with smiles? Even fishermen scoffed at the unwanted Atlantic Ocean transplant when alewives piled in wind rows along the Leelanau coastline in the 1960s.
