A couple's hobby turned professional workshop in historic Columbus, Ohio, house

Pat and Dave Lewis have been making things since the 1970s. “There is so much we have learned from family, friends and other mentors over the years,” Dave says. “Before moving to Ohio in 1993, we were juried into the craft fairs called Harvest Festival and made tons of quilts, shelves, tables, rocking horses and other home decoration items.”

The couple spent the next several years refurbishing an 1890s era brick house to call home and developing community gardens in the Olde Towne East area of Columbus. Over the years in Ohio, they completed the occasional woodworking project for other people.

“Pat and others formed a small group that made dozens of quilts for newborns,” Dave recounts, “and others who needed a special quilt to remind them they were loved. This last year, we took a business course together and decided to ramp things up and apply what we learned. Hand Made in Olde Towne is the result of that catharsis. We have grown to love the satisfaction of making things, the challenge of trying new techniques and being creative.”

With a 100 percent custom-built business model, each project is different. The Lewis’s wheelhouse includes a wide range of home decor: benches, outlines of states, monogrammed serving trays, pumpkins porch decorations for Halloween, faux candles for Christmas etc. The ordering process for something custom often starts with someone saying, “Hey, could you make a …”

Pat and Dave work with the client to understand what they are trying to achieve and return a sketch to the client to confirm everyone is on the same page.

“Then we dig in and work up materials cost and come up with an estimate or quote, usually with some options and the price for each one,” Dave says. “When the client is ready to commit, we typically ask for a down payment/non-refundable deposit to cover materials, set a date for completion and get busy creating.”

Cost, turnaround and shipping depends on the request, but Pat and Dave’s repertoire is extensive. Whether you’re looking for some lakeside cabin planter boxes or ways to spruce up below decks, you will find it Hand Made in Olde Towne.
