The Heart Of 30,000 Islands

Published in the December 2017 Issue November 2017 Feature Austa Cook

If you spun the reel of time back two centuries ago, you’d find the British Navy’s nautical surveyor Henry Wolsey Bayfield carefully navigating the thousands of channels, bays and inlets that course through the heart of the 30,000 Islands. As the first cartographer to successfully create accurate maps of Georgian Bay, his name has since been proudly taken up by the village of Bayfield.

Full-Service Marinas

Nowadays, boaters from anywhere have a much easier time of it as they enjoy the rich hospitality of the largest marinas on the east shore of Lake Huron.

The Village of Bayfield Marina is perched at the mouth of the Bayfield River and has a range of 13 to 15 transient docks that run $1.75 per foot each night. They also offer three canoes, three kayaks and two paddleboards for free to their boaters, with competitive non-boater rates also available. There are public washrooms as well as private boater washrooms that include showers, among many other quality amenities.

“A courtesy option we have for our transient boaters is our van in which we can drive people to dinner or shopping for better accessibility. Our fuel dock offers diesel, gas and pump-outs,” shared the staff.
